Have you ever thought what would happen if we didn't have clean drinkable water to drink? Even though I am only 7 1/2 years old, I know that if I want a glass of water all I have to do is go to the kitchen sink and turn on the faucet. So like me you probably never thought, "what if I didn't have clean water to drink". Do you know what I mean when I ask you what is clean water or what is clean drinkable water is? Probably not. So Let me explain to you what I mean when I say clean water. Clean water is what doesn't have some of these things in it; oil, trash or garbage, nails with rust, glue, paint, pee, and glass just to name a few things. Now, our planet has two forms of water. There is salt water that is in our oceans that fish need to live and then there is fresh water that people, land animals, birds, trees, and bugs need to live. Both forms of water is very important for those who need it to live, but things on land need fresh water. Do you know where fresh water comes from? Do you know how fresh water can be distoried? Most of our fresh water is frozen in our polar ice caps, some of it is underneath the ground which is called, "groundwater" and then there is the fresh water that is flowing around us from the mountains. Our fresh was is very easy to distroy because we don't have alot around us so we have to take care of it like it was our family. Here are some ways that fresh water can be distoried and we can never get it clean again; Fresh water that pours into our oceans turns into salt water, oil spills, water with trash in it, water with chemicals in it and acid rain. Let's pretend for a second and take a cup of salt, a cup of oil, a cup of trash and a cup of chemicals and add them to a glass of water and stir it together. What happens? did it mix together like Kool-Aid? or do you have a glass of water with a bunch of junk in it? Now while we are still pretending, would you drink that glass of water? You probably wouldn't, I know I wouldn't. So now what you need to do is this....Try to take out everything you just put in your water and see if the water looks like it did before you added all this junk. Does it look like it did before or not? Probably not! Do you see why we need to make sure we keep water clean? Water never goes back to how it was when the water was clean. To help us better understand how water doesn't mix with other things, we did a requirement from the Brownie Try-It called; "Water is Everywhere" and we did this activity called; Water Layers. |
